Let’s get started with this episode to break down the mindset shifts that have helped me grow my business, expand my network, and find alignment backed by action that’s important, and accountability to make my business goals not just another check mark on a list, but a powerful feeling of growth and expansion.
I wanna kick off this episode with a mindset shift that completely changed the way I walk into rooms. It changed the way I walked into first dates while I was single in the dumpster fire of all the dating apps. Changed how I walk into conferences, live podcasts, and networking events. It even changed the way I walked up to the sidelines to watch Eliana.
My 7-year-old niece play softball. Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve been very motive driven. Before anything, I would ask, what’s the point? Why am I here? How can I add value? What can I help with? And if I didn’t bring a plate of food or a hostess gift, I always had my camera in hand so I didn’t feel worthless.
Everything I did had a plan and I made it count. I walked into first dates, dazzled by the idea that this may just be my last first date. Wink, wink. It usually wasn’t. I would attend workshops and conferences knowing there’s a fresh new audience of potential clients. Everyone needs photos, right? During game days on the sidelines for my niece and nephew, sports games, I would be checking out the families and checking out the moms thinking, oh my gosh, they’re gonna need family photos this fall.
How can I get them on my email list? Everything felt calculated. For someone that loves to make plans, to have no plans as a business owner, that got into business for more freedom and more flexibility with my schedule. I thought I was controlling everything to expedite my goals faster. I didn’t realize it, but I actually was blocking out so many organic opportunities and future referrals simply because I walked into every door on a mission.
The mission before I met Mike was to find my husband. My mission at Women Empowerment Events and meetups was to book more writing clients. My mission at t-Ball and football games with my family was to be on the radar for future family shoots and mini session opportunities. I tried to make every moment count.
I thought I was manifesting and open to receiving, but I actually was walking around with a blocked energy. Forcing the idea that clients and money were all around me and I just needed to tell people about what I do and how I can help, and they would hire me. This episode is packed with 10 mindset shifts to help build the business and life of your dreams.
I. It wasn’t until I made this one mindset shift that things completely changed my life and business. Welcome to Quianna Marie Weekly, a podcast for creatives who love to celebrate wins big or small by dancing in the kitchen photographers who are excited to serve their clients and friends who are ready to chase.

Ready? Let’s go.
Once I swapped the mission from finding new clients to finding new friends. My entire business changed, and if we’re being honest, my entire life and how I view the world changed too. First of all, that statement right there, swapping the game plan from finding more clients to finding new friends, completely took the pressure off every single door I walked into.
You know that quote that’s been floating around Pinterest since about 2007? Confidence isn’t walking into a room and thinking you’re better than everyone. It’s walking in and not having to compare yourself to anyone at all. I used to walk into rooms and think, do I belong here? Are these people gonna like me?
Does my outfit define me? Is anyone gonna notice that my old Davy sandals are starting to fall apart? If I walk into homes, I would make sure to tuck my worn out sandals under the couch or under someone else’s shoes. Now I walk into rooms with so much confidence that I think, are these people cool? Do I like them?
In my heart, I know I’m worth knowing. Who in the room is also worth knowing? Switching. That mindset has completely changed the way I run my business and how I’m now attracting more clients instead of chasing them down. I love starting conversations, chatting about life, my puppy faith, parking situations, the food or signature mocktail, and finding connection points.
Before I even mention what I do in my business, I wanna be known for being me as a person and not just my business. I wanna be remembered for who I am being, not what I’m doing. I. When we walk into every situation thinking, what can I get out of this? Or with a mission to book more clients, sell your course, find your future husband, or even shop for something specific.
You tend to block out opportunities you aren’t even aware of. Why is it that when we’re shopping for a wedding guest dress, it feels impossible until a tight timeline, right? We only have this one day on a Thursday afternoon before the weekend, you know, before we’re attending this wedding to find this dress and in a panic, it’s hard to find.
It’s hard to find that perfect dress. But when you just run into Nordstrom Rack for a new white, basic T-shirt, and you find something beautiful, like a fun dress or something for just kind of like a maybe one day outfit. You realize, wait, what? Why was that so easy to find? It’s the moments when you’re not in a rush and focusing on one thing that other cute tops and dresses pop up, right?
Isn’t that crazy? Like, why does that happen? Now, I don’t always buy the cute dresses or outfits for that just one day, maybe because, but I’m using this theory to prove that when we’re laser focused on one thing, we often have our blinders up and miss opportunities. It’s when we have plans in mind, but are leaving room for magic and walk around with an open mind and warm heart.
That’s when we start attracting all of those GLIs. Changing the mindset from finding clients to finding friends, reduces the stress and makes things feel less calculated and more natural. Now you may be thinking, okay, hold on. Key. Finding friends is just as stressful or maybe even more scary than trying to connect to make new friends.
Putting yourself out there, meeting new people and showing up authentically as ourselves can be hard. Trust me, I understand that, especially when you walk into rooms where you don’t know anyone, it can actually be easier to talk about your personal brand or your business as a talking point, instead of just word dumping your life story to strangers.
So I totally understand that. Here’s why it’s important to establish friendships versus only networking. To find clients, I wanna play out two scenarios and paint a picture of possibilities with two very different outcomes. When you introduce yourself and only make talking points or connect about your business, the person you’re talking to categorizes you into a mental Rolodex.
I know I’m dating myself or a checklist in their mind about what you do for work. Typically, they’ll make a note to themselves if they need to hire you or not. Maybe not hiring you on the spot, of course, but they’re probably thinking, oh my gosh, I need to connect with you and learn more. Or they’re maybe thinking, check, I already have a friend that does what she does, or, I have no need for your services.
You see, they’re instantly putting you in a box based on their needs. Do I need those services? Yes or no? Do I want what she’s selling? Yes or no? Can I think of someone off the top of my head right this second that I can connect you with? Yes or no? After that quick intro, an elevator speech. You’re either a yes, like a heck yes, capital yes, I need to connect with you or a no thanks, girl.
I’m glad I met you. And then they’ll probably forget about you by the end of the day, like a crinkled business card they find at the bottom of their purse weeks later. Does that sound familiar? Instead, walking into those conversations, sharing quick vulnerable stories, highlighting and elevating the women around you, literally, that’s the easiest thing you can do if it’s hard for you to compliment or.
Share praise to the person you just met two seconds ago. Share praise to the host or the hostess. Sharing compliments and finding relatable moments with women you met can turn those work related questions to this instead. Hmm. I wonder if she lives close to me and would be down to grab a coffee. Oh, I love her energy.
I need to be her friend. She mentioned she knows so and so. I wonder if she’ll help make an introduction. Those questions don’t just go from a yes or no, like a George Strait check, yes or no box song, right? They’re a little bit more open-ended and they spark connection. If you’re putting yourself in a box by only talking about your business, you’re firing and missing big opportunities for future connections.
The people you meet at your next event or gathering may not need your services, but I’m sure, and when I say I’m sure I’m like 150000% sure that someone in their circle, they may not know it yet, but in the future, they will need you. Right? They will need you and your offers one day, but we have to develop that friendship.
And those connections for you to be top of mind. The goal for me lately has been to chat up new friends, dive deep into genuine conversations, no fluff around here. You know, I hate the small talk. I only like deep stuff, right? And here’s the secret. I love to take selfies with the ones I connect with the most.
If we’re not friends yet, I ask, follow them and make a connection on Instagram. I tell them it’s so that I can tag them when I make a recap video or B roll of all the event, which is absolutely true. Like I’m not making that up. As a marketing strategy, it’s genius to easily set up an add to story button for your new friends, but it’s also a great way to tap into their feeds and continue to build friendships and deeper connections even after you say goodbye and step into troll mode after the event.
Now, I wanna make this clear too. I don’t have this in my notes, but I wanna make it clear that when I am making these selfies or I’m asking for these photos and B-roll and all this stuff. I am genuinely only doing that with the people that I connect with, the energy that I love, people that I just feel like I gravitate towards.
I’m not just walking up to strangers and asking them for selfies. So I just wanted to kind of make that clear. I know sometimes I can be very little about, like literal about things and then sometimes I kind of been a little too vague. So I just wanna make that crystal clear that this is after the conversation.
This is after we giggled and shared compliments and. You know, introduced ourselves. That’s when I’m, it’s kind of like a little goodbye, like a thank you. So nice to meet you. And can I grab a quick selfie? And literally nine tens outta 10, they’re gonna say, heck yes, of course. As a reminder, friends support their friends and referrals are stamps of approval.
Clients will absolutely refer you and your business if they loved your client experience and adore you. If you think about it though, it’s the clients that turn into genuine friendships that continue referring. You see how that like naturally turned into a client to a friend? Like it’s just, it’s all part of the magic I.

I’m confident that my business has grown and I’ve been able to make real, genuine friendships around the country by investing in my business and prioritizing behind the scenes and B-roll content. All right, let’s get into this here. Let’s break down 10 powerful mindset shifts that have changed everything for me and my clients from scaling without burnout to showing up in your business like the powerhouse you truly are.
And you don’t have to just take my word for it. Some of these insights are inspired by the incredible guest we’ve had here on the podcast from Mary Mo to Jamie Fisher. To Jira bean and more. I’ll also be sprinkling in some personal stories and lessons that I’ve learned behind the camera. Ready? Let’s get this party started.
Let’s knock out 10 more powerful mindset shifts that have completely changed my life and business.
Number one, Done is better than perfect. All right, so your people need momentum, not a masterpiece. This mindset shift is something we all need to hear today. Just get it done. You can always update perfect and polish later.
Your audience needs what you’re selling today. Stop letting your fears and showing up and sharing your work or selling something. Be greater than the fears your dream clients have. I want you to let that sink in really fast. Don’t let your fears of showing up be greater than the fears that your clients are currently having or your dream clients are struggling with.
They need you and done is better than perfect. Okay.
Number two, visibility isn’t vanity, it’s leadership. Woo. I am also dropping another flashback episode for you to add to your playlist with this one and make sure to add episode number 1 53 6 figure launch with Felicia Romero. We chat all about a brand session that we photograph together and a launch strategy that helped Felicia reach six figures with one launch.
Now, you and I both know that Felicia has decades of work lessons and entrepreneurship under her belt, so it wasn’t just one launch that hit those numbers. She openly talks about that, that the dedication and the years of work it took to hit those clickbait numbers. But I’m here to remind you that we’re all putting in the work.
Hitting those milestones and hitting those numbers is possible. Plus, this is why I’m such an advocate for investing in branding sessions, not just for your business as a whole, but for launches, new offers and hosting upcoming events. You’re growing, your expanding and your energy is shifting. Let’s capture that magic to help catapult you to new heights in your business.
If you know Felicia personally, you know she’s a powerhouse. She does the inner work, the workouts, and shows up online to share the magic behind the scenes. Make sure to check out episode number 1 53, the Six Figure Lunch with Felicia Romero. That is one that you absolutely need to listen to. Literally every, every season, like every, every quarter, every time I’m ready to launch something new, definitely tap back into that.
I also wanna mention too, like this mindset shift visibility isn’t vanity, it’s leadership. When you are putting yourself online and you are sharing your value, you’re sharing your expertise. It’s not about, oh my gosh, look at me, look at me. Energy. I. It’s more of a how can I help you energy. I am the expert.
I am ready to take your business to the next level. For me, as a branding photographer, I want you to insert your own industry and how you’re helping people, because this is literally going to just change the, the trajectory of your life and business. When you understand that visibility isn’t vanity, it’s leadership.
Ooh, I love that one.
Number three, your brand deserves to evolve just like you. Over the last 15 years, I’ve grown as a photographer at capturing family portraits, weddings, boudoir lifestyle products, seniors and grads, seasonal mini sessions, generation shoots for extended families all the way to today, offering brand new photography for businesses and personal brands.
I’m still me. I’m still Quianna, with a big, wild dream of building a wedding venue from the ground up. Even those dreams have evolved to dreaming up a retreat space that can host intimate elopements retreats and family gatherings. Things have changed over the years and it’s absolutely okay to switch things up and to outgrow your dreams.
You are not too much, you’re just too big for the old version of you. Make sure to add bold episodes featuring Mary Moranz episode number 1 1 1. That’s 111 for slow growth equals strong roots. And episode. Recently she was just on episode number 180 7. Stop underestimating yourself with Mary Moranz. You deserve to evolve.
Trust me, your highest self will. Thank you. So please, please, please, just know that this mindset shift really has changed a lot because I feel like I’m that person that gives a hundred percent to everything that I do. Like even just loading the dishwasher, I’m like, I gotta do this the best. Right? And so like if you can relate to that.
Just know that it’s okay for things to change. It’s okay for seasons to grow and ebb and flow and stopping something isn’t always quitting. It’s actually finding that realignment that you may be missing.
Number four, rest is a revenue strategy. I challenge you to block out weekly checkout days or even a couple hours if daily checkout like me days are just not possible for you and your life right now.
I totally get it. So blocking out just a couple hours during your busy week to do nothing. Of course when I say nothing, I try to cram things into the day like doing laundry or easy house chores that need to get done while I rest. If you’re anything like me, I understand how impossible it can feel to truly rest, but please, please my love, prioritize rest like your bank account depends on it because it does busy, does not equal profit.
So this mindset shift really came through like in bold letters and like all the bright light. Um, when I had the opportunity to interview Michelle, who I actually got to meet at the Powerhouse Women Event last year, you have to take a scroll back to episode number 180 6 Health and Fitness as a business plan with Michelle Stallings for more about becoming the best version of yourself physically and emotionally for your life and business and.
And I feel like I need to just send this little reminder again. Rest is growth. Like rest is actually a revenue strategy when we’re constantly in this burnout phase. You just can’t outrun being tired and being distressed, right? Like being stressed. It’s just not possible. If you take anything from this episode, maybe this is your reminder to take a nap or to plan some days to just rest.
And I also wanna note too, before we move on, how important it’s to completely shut off because I am sharing this from my own example that sometimes I take rest days or. I enjoy a morning to just kind of catch up, get things done, and then I find myself on my phone either, either working from my home phone or scrolling, let’s be honest, scrolling or watching videos.
And then I realize, oh my gosh, like my brain hurts. Like your eyeballs actually hurt, so you’re not really resting. So with this mindset shift, put your phone away.
Number five, you’re only in the second season of friends. If life feels a little bit out of control or like you’re not on the path you imagined for your life and business, hold on, because it’s about to get really good.
I see you, you’re putting in the work, taking chances and making bold moves and even moving away from your hometown. Oftentimes life likes to break us apart in order to let the love and light shine through. Take a scroll back to episode number one 90. It’s only the second season of friends. To learn more about MaRynnTaylor and how she made me cry in my white cowboy boots, standing next to my cousin, singing our heads off during the Kelsey Ballerini concert, this mindset shift hit me upside the head and made me look at my life in business.
So differently. If you’re a fan of the show friends, building a business, or feel like all of your friends and business besties are lapping you on this race of life, trust me, it’s worth a listen. Currently, my baby brother is married with two kids. One of my best friends just celebrated her daughter’s 10th birthday, and I have business besties clearing over a hundred K months.
Of course the devil reaches me and makes me think I’m lacking or like I’m behind. But boy, oh boy, that couldn’t be farther from the truth. I’m exactly where I’m meant to be and I couldn’t be happier if those thoughts creep in here and there, it’s not a matter of if, but when they pop into your thoughts, I promise.
This mindset shift that we’re only in the second season of friends will make you laugh and appreciate your beautiful life and business you’re building. Check out episode number one 90 for more of that mindset shift.
Number six, what you’re avoiding is usually your gold. Ooh, I love this one so much. This came up during the conversation with my soul sister, Jacqueline Renee, on episode number 180 9 for the release method with Jacqueline.
Throughout my entire business journey, almost every business owner that I’ve met along the way is now doing something different and has made a big pivot. Now, I’m not talking about earning a college degree in something and then picking up. A career that has nothing to do with that degree. I mean, honestly, that happens all the time.
I mean that most entrepreneurs turn their hobbies into a job or embark on entrepreneurship because they had no choice to. Over the years as they continue to grow and explore new opportunities, make things change, this mindset shift all about finding the gold by discovering what you’re avoiding is what it’s all about.
There’s magic that sparkles when your God-given talents, interest, and gifts collide with a joy for helping others and solving problems. As a wedding photographer, I connected deeply with my clients right away. In fact, just from my demeanor on wedding days, guests ask me all the time, are you friends with the bride?
Are you related to the couple? This used to drive me crazy because I felt like they weren’t taking me seriously as a professional photographer. Like they just thought I was a friend of the bride. I. When in reality they were noting how friendly, attentive, and proactive I was photographing the day that they thought I took extra care of the couple because I look like a lifelong friend, not just someone they hired from a recent referral as a wedding photographer, I was super in tune with the emotions and needs that my couples and all the vendors around me needed without having to ask, not because I was psychic, but because I paid attention.
Attention to detail was a huge client experience win, and when I was able to share that on social media through B-roll and all the behind the scenes moments, the real magic happened in person, and then I got it online. Once I figured out the strategy behind sharing those moments and highlighting vendors through their golden touches and sharing all of their, just going above and beyond moments, the referrals and inquiries started flooding, and honestly, they haven’t stopped even today.
As I’ve stepped into more branding, one thing I love to do is to pull affirmation cards before photo shoots. It helps my clients take a moment to ground themselves, set intentions, and reflect on where they’ve been and where they’re going. I used to only whip out those Oracle cards and decks of affirmations when I already had this little mental note that certain clients were more on the woo woo side.
Like I would never just pull out a deck to someone that was a recent referral or someone that I didn’t know personally. I honestly was afraid once I started keeping them in my bag. Pulling them out before every session. That’s when I strap gold. I used to hide behind my intuition. Today, I love asking questions and tapping into my downloads without the fear of anyone thinking I’m crazy.
So I challenge you. What is it about you that you’re hiding or avoiding? Is it time for a pivot? Are you ready to try something new? The thing you’re resisting is likely the thing that will set you free. Woo, I get the goosebumps thinking about that. So you absolutely have to add episode number 180 9, the release method with Jacqueline Renee.
We literally just do a deep dive into all of this, so make sure you add that to your playlist too.
Number seven, you are not your business, but it reflects you. We started this business for more freedom, more stability, and to scale our income without any limits. Yet many of us are stuck on this hamster wheel and we’ve turned ourselves into employees of our business.
Instead of the CEO, we work so hard to become. If you’re currently driving the struggle bus, trying to keep up and grow. Make sure to add episode number 1 73, finding Your Sweet Spot with Liz Harkey to your playlist. We cover the mental blocks and limiting beliefs that hold us back. What we can do to reframe our stories to move forward.
When your values guide your brand, success feels right. Your brand is not just what you offer, it’s what you believe. Ooh, another good one. I just love this conversation with Liz and you know, we really dive deep into the limiting beliefs that we have been telling ourselves over and over, and then how to reframe that, how to just become unstuck.
It’s a really good episode. You have to add that to your playlist too.
Eight, Selling is a form of service. Selling shouldn’t feel salesy. If you’re helping people, your dream clients are praying for you. With all of these social media strategies flying around, at the end of the day, business is business and you’ll forever be in business.
If you solve problems, your dream clients are searching for you and the offers and products you’re selling, how are you showing up online? Social media, your website, blog, Pinterest, and even for in-person events, developing your personal brand with B-roll clips helps too. We talk more about this with Sarah on episode number 180 5, less Alcohol, more Business Growth with Sarah Williamson.
When you show up, your clients show up, so please, please, please, babe, don’t be afraid to sell. Your clients are ready, their credit cards are out. We just need to use the right messaging to help build that trust, share your expertise, and prove that you and your business are the only choice for them.
Number nine, your time sucks are costing you money.
They’re costing you dollars. One of the biggest aha moments for my interview with Jamie Fisher was how valuable time is for our life and business. We’ve all heard that before, but imagine paying up the time you lost. Okay, this is gonna get crazy. So for example, let’s say you’re working on a task that you could potentially outsource for $20 per hour and your hourly rate just for easy math.
’cause you know, I’m not a math person. Let’s say your hourly rate for some tasks is calculated at a hundred dollars per hour. It’s easier to imagine saving money on tasks that you don’t do, but what about the mindset shift of charging your business for the tasks you’re currently doing that could be released to someone else?
Paying someone an extra $80 for tasks that can be outsourced, that’s thousands of dollars a month. That can actually save you big time. Like thinking about this literally made my brain hurt where it like, I don’t know what it is. I think because of business owners, I mean time is always your best, your best value, right?
Like it’s your highest value. But like, I think as a business owner, we’re used to hustling. We’re used to grinding. Like we give up our time, we show up and we actually put time like on the bottom of the totem pole. So that thought of losing time, I don’t wanna say like we’re used to it and it’s okay, like we’re not getting used and abused by it, but like, it’s just different to calculate.
But when you actually imagine dollars leaving your bank account, like paying up on that time, that’s when I thought, oh wow, like this needs to be, this needs to be fixed asap. So the next time you find yourself scrolling, head over to jamie fisher collective.com/time. Dash suck. It’s jamie fisher collective.com/time-suck to take her quiz and get your time back.
Make sure to add episode number 1 91, peace and Profit with Jamie Fisher to your playlist too. Ooh, I am loving these mindset shifts. I’m saving one of my favorites for last, and ooh, I’m just so excited.
So number 10, there’s no shame in starting small, There is in playing small. That was a mic drop moment by Jira Bean, and I’m still pinching myself that I had the opportunity to interview her on the podcast.
Jera shared such a powerful reframe around showing up even when you’re not the most followed, the most polished or the most ready. Your people don’t care how many followers you have. They care how you make them feel and what you’re teaching them. Starting small isn’t the problem. Staying small because you’re afraid to be seen.
Now, that’s the real trap. Jera’s energy is so grounded in just Start Energy, right? But she matches it with strategy. She reminded us that showing up with intention even to an audience of 50 people can be more impactful than going viral to the wrong 5,000 or 500,000 or 5 million. Make sure to add episode number 1 65 reels and tiktoks with Jared to your playlist.
It’ll help you not only build your confidence and find clarity with content creation, but will also help remind you who the F you are, your community needs you. They need your offers and want to buy from you. They want to buy from you, babe. How are you showing up so they can see you and truly see the real you?
Alright, so I’m gonna go back really fast, like speed, lightning fast, and I’m gonna share these 10 mindset shifts because I feel like I can share these quick little moments with you, but I really want them to sink in. Number one, done is better than perfect. Number two, visibility isn’t vanity, it’s leadership.
Number three, your brand deserves to evolve just like you.
Number four, rest is a revenue strategy. Ca-Ching, Ca-Ching!! Everyone take a nap. Number five, you’re only in the second season of friends. Number six, what you’re avoiding is usually your gold. Number seven, you are not your business, but it reflects you.
Number eight, selling is a form of service. Number nine, your time sucks are costing you money, honey. And number 10, there’s no shame in starting small, but there is in plain small. I hope these mindset shifts gave you permission to dream bigger, move quicker, and take that next aligned step. Whether you’re booking brand shoots, building an offer, or trying to show up on stories without sounding like a robot, it all starts here.
