Okay, gorgeous. It is time to figure out where to plan your next session. For many of us, we land in two camps. One is flooding with ideas, scrolling for days on Pinterest with inspiration. And maybe we just need help sourcing locations that look like the vibe that we’re going for. We already have these visions in our mind, but we just need to pick the location.
The other camp maybe has an outfit in mind but has no clue where to even begin. Should it be indoors or outside? Do we need to rent a studio or can we take pictures in your home? Can we rent an Airbnb for just a couple hours and not spend any money? Um, anything more than we need and have to actually spend the night?
Maybe you’re thinking, I want my brand to be geared towards more luxury and high value clients, but my house doesn’t actually fit that vibe. Please send help. All right, well, we’re going to break it all down. As you know, my brain works best with lists. So let’s start with some questions to get those ideas flowing.
These universal questions will help create unique answers for each of us. Let’s begin the planning phase for selecting the best location for your next brand shoot. Okay. So number one, what is the intention of your photo shoot? Are you planning this session to boost your confidence? Maybe we just need to plan a mini branding session to feel polished and breathe the life into your profile picture and email signature.
Do you need updates that feel more energized and in alignment with what you’re working on these days? Maybe it’s time to level up your vibes and online presence with a Crush Your Content half day session. Are you looking to connect with your dream clients and prove why you’re worth the investment?
Scheduling your photographer to capture you interacting with clients and doing the work, actually seeing you do the work, will gain a ton of trust for future clients. Do you have a new shiny offer to release? Maybe we just need some mock up photos for those, right? So what is it that you need and what is that intention?
When we have a better idea of what exactly you’re planning for your shoot, other than just looking your best, we add so much context, value, and intention to your photo session. This makes planning and picking a location so much easier. When I do my own branding sessions with my bestie Tara, the best shoots we collaborate together on always come out so much better when I have an intention in mind.
For example, when I celebrated my 100th podcast episode, we planned an entire shoot to celebrate that milestone. Sometimes we just need to plan a session to get Out of a funk and to spark some new energy and attract more opportunities. If you’re planning to toss confetti with celebration vibes, I suggest doing them inside in a studio.
In fact, I have a link for the BEST CONFETTI EVER for you in the show notes. You have to make sure you get this one confetti that floats. So it’s actually made of tissue paper and these really. It’s actually kind of large circles, and when you toss them in the air, they float a little bit longer, so you can have more time to take photos and celebrate.
Also, if I catch you doing confetti outside, and you’re not picking up every single morsel of the confetti, You’re not my friend. I’m sorry. Like, this is not cool. Do not launch confetti outdoors in nature unless it’s completely biodegradable and even then I don’t, I still don’t really like it, but don’t come at me about popping confetti in locations that you don’t belong.
Okay. But leave those for the studio and make sure you pick it up. Do you have a growing team? Gathering everyone for a photo shoot can be fun and create more memories for your growing business. Team photos, individual portraits, and content creation can be so fun. These photos can absolutely be taken at your office, in your shop or salon, or even outdoors at a local park.
So these are all things to consider when you are planning your brand shoot and you’re trying to set intentions for the shoot. In other words, what’s the point, right? Why are we doing this? Once you kind of have some notes on that, let’s move to number two.
I suggest taking a peek at your quarterly planning and figuring out when you’re dropping your next launch, releasing new products, or maybe you’re experiencing a shift in your energy, or You are in the thick of a pivot, depending on how elaborate of a session you’re thinking of. I can say realistically, it takes about three weeks to three months to plan and execute a brand shoot.
Plus another week or two to get your professional images edited and delivered. Back to the basics here. We need to come up with a specific date or window of scheduling options for a couple days with more flexibility. Another thing to consider when you are planning your branding shoot is looking at the holiday season, what’s coming up.
So for example, right now we have black Friday coming up. These are things to think about now. So you can start incorporating some of that decor, some of those gifts for your gift guides, whatever it is that you have going on. Definitely think of. including the holidays that are coming up and how you can incorporate those into your sessions now.
So your photos are already ready to go when you’re ready to release them. Number three, what vibe are you feeling for your branding session? Now I want you, if you’re listening now or, you know, if you’re listening now at your desk or your office, I want you to just kind of relax your shoulders for a bit.
I want you to just kind of do a little shrug, move things around, take a deep breath. If you are doing chores right now and you’re busy multitasking, come back to this moment and release your jaw line, roll your neck and just take a second to really be present for this conversation. Okay. Do you picture yourself in a studio with a blazer as a working professional?
Are you more of a spiritual girly that maybe barefoot with your toes in the sand or somewhere outdoors? If you’re planning a more personalized branding session, considering a studio or simple background location, maybe best to have the focus of the session about you and your business and the offers that you’re selling.
If you’re interested in a more robust content day, maybe an Airbnb home rental would be better. For a lifestyle shoot with variety, right? So just imagine yourself cooking or meal prepping in the kitchen for an upcoming ebook or one of your guides that you’re trying to release. Maybe you’re reading a book in bed and you’re sharing about another type of ebook or another guide that you’re excited to share about working in the office or sipping a cocktail by the pool.
The possibilities are endless once you start thinking about those lifestyle environments. Number four, what budget do you have in mind? This may be something to circle back to if you really aren’t sure where to begin. We can tell ourselves, Oh, sure. I have a number in mind, but then you start planning and start thinking about the budget.
And soon that budget just flies out the window. But it’s important to consider that a professional brand session with a photographer can cost about 500 upwards of 5, 000 or more, depending on who you decide to work with. Plus adding your outfit, your hair and makeup studio or Airbnb rentals, and any props, they add up really fast.
Typically locations like studios, Peerspace rentals or Airbnbs can cost upwards of a hundred dollars an hour or more like that’s probably just the bare minimum and be careful because sometimes either Airbnb rentals if they allow an hourly rate or specifically Peerspace rentals, they only allow like a two hour minimum or a three hour minimum so you may see that number and think oh I can afford that but then you start adding up what exactly is needed for that day and it can get kind of pricey so there’s your warning.
Every photographer offers different pricing and some even have studios at no extra cost to use. As I start rattling off location ideas, it’s important to have a good reference for your budget as we continue. And as your sister in the industry, I need to remind you that you can literally take legit branding photos and content images with your cell phone, right in your living room with your tripod or outside exploring for a free 99, right?
Like, There’s zero budget there for you to get started today. You don’t need to spend a lot to get started. However, as your sister with a little bit of tough love in this industry, it’s important to remind you that what got you here won’t get you where you want to go next. Just like everything else in life, investing in yourself and investing in your business will continue to help you grow and expand.
Number five, how can we source these locations? Now that we have these ideas, we’ve set our intentions. We have some ideas of what we’re thinking. How do we find these locations? Well, do you have a family member or a neighbor that may be willing to open their home for a branding session? Do you have a friend that recently shot somewhere and you scrolled across their feed and thought, Oh my gosh, where is this?
You can absolutely reach out to them and ask. What about your office, working environment, your salon or your studio or your shop? Where is it that you’re doing the work? Can you plan your shoot there? You can always turn your home into a studio. In fact, I have a whole episode dedicated to sharing how I turn my living room into a home studio.
Check out episode 96 for more on that. Social media is great for sourcing locations to try searching for your city and studio. So for example, Phoenix photo studio, Scottsdale photography studio on your favorite social media platforms and Pinterest. Don’t forget to search Pinterest because a bunch of options will pop up there as well.
Peer space is one of my favorite tools to find the perfect location for your photo shoots. I can easily search for locations based on my needs and my city. To find stuff locally and while traveling. I love booking Peerspace for shoots, events, and creative content days. They often allow hourly rates, which are great because some are legit homes that offer their spaces to rent hourly.
On Peerspace, you can find all sorts of vibes and styles if you’re looking for a small podcasting studio. Backyard pool, luxury home, dance studios, even wedding venues. I’ve seen wedding venues for rent on Peerspace. It’s incredible. Literally anything you can imagine, you can probably find on Peerspace.
Now that we have a general idea about when to plan, where to consider booking, let’s break down some photography hacks and secrets to make the best choices with your selections. I’ll be sharing tips on booking your next shoot at your office. Home local studio, Airbnb slash peer space in the outdoors and local businesses.
In my experience, every single session ever booked has taken place at one of these types of locations. Sometimes we have to make the best of any situation, but I’m hoping these tips will help either eliminate some options and help direct the perfect brand session for you. So you don’t feel like you’re just stabbing those locations in the dark and making the best out of like any situation.
So let’s start with the office. This can be your workplace, a home office, or anywhere that you do business. Maybe you’re a hairstylist and you work in a salon with other stylists. Maybe you’re a realtor and you work a lot out of your car. You actually work, you spend more time working in your car, but you do have an office you visit sometimes, right?
Maybe you’re a wedding photographer and your office is ever changing to wineries, golf courses, wedding venues, wherever you work. I think it’s important to showcase yourself doing what you love. I would consider requesting a day of the week that is the least busy and even close to the public, because I love people, But when I’m getting my photograph taken, I don’t like people around, like I don’t like people, right?
So we’re trying to hide from them. If you are planning a session at a place of business, it’s important to note if you need any permits or permission to photograph in that office space. So we’ll talk more about permits as we get into more locations, but just keep that in mind that if it’s a shared space, you may need permits or permission to photograph there.
Another location I love is home, right in your home. Even if your current home isn’t your dream home and you think it isn’t photo worthy, I promise you can find a corner with some good natural light and make it look clean and cute. Your home is a great option for a lower budget option with lots of variety to play with photos on your porch, in your backyard, in your kitchen, and any other bedrooms and living room.
So like I mentioned before, in the office space, if your office is not an actual go to office and it’s Maybe downstairs in your home or just a small space in your home. That’s a great spot to take photos too. I’ve even done content videos in bathrooms for getting ready with me video clips, right? So like you can get so creative with it.
I even follow a creator that takes really great TikTok videos and photos. In her bathroom because it has the best light and she put this really fun, funky, bright, pinky, orangey, like sunrise color shower curtain. And you would never know it was a shower curtain unless like she showed you. Right. So that’s something to consider too.
We can be really creative right in our home. And like I mentioned before. It’s free 99 to take advantage of your home. Another location I love are local studios, right? These are actual designed photo studios. There are lots of options in your city or neighboring towns to check out. Studios are great for solid background options and many local studios.
Um, are really cute around here. They’ll actually create vignette like vignettes. I can’t say that word vignettes, um, which are just cute decor and seasonal props. And this is something to take note of during the holidays. So you’re either going to love it and you’re going to want to have that decor. But if you’re planning a branding session, just that happens to fall in November or December, be mindful that there may be Christmas trees in the space and there may be garland all over and that may be exactly what you’re going for.
Or not. So, just be very careful about planning that, um, like that studio space during certain holidays. Um, you can get really creative with that, but just, Just check it out and ask some questions before, okay? I typically search on Google and search on social media for new spots and love asking my photo besties for their favorite locations.
Your photographer will absolutely have suggestions too. And this is where Peerspace comes in for me. If you’re interested in checking out Peerspace, make sure to grab my link in the show notes to save 50 on your first booking. So, that’s incredible. I have a link for you if you’re interested. Okay, so another option I love for locations are booking Airbnbs.
This is a great option if you’re looking to elevate your vision and photograph in a more luxurious location. Airbnbs typically can be a bit more on the pricey side. Not all of them allow an hourly rate. So as a key tip, I would try reaching out to them and asking if they’re willing to share their space for an hourly rate or for a photo shoot.
Sometimes they might surprise you and offer a weekday option at a much lower rate for simply just a quick photo shoot. Try searching for the Airbnb on Instagram. And this is my little sneaky key tip here. A lot of Airbnbs will have a house name. So check that out. Search it. Um, and if you can’t find it on the Airbnb, because sometimes they are a little more cautious about that, I would be like a total investigator and be sneaky and look through their photos.
And maybe they have a sign in the kitchen, or sometimes they’ll have their wifi picture. The password may be crossed out. But they’ll have their name listed. Search that. So take that house name, which is something cutesy, right? Like, um, the Dreyfus, for example, is a really beautiful Airbnb space here in Scottsdale that I recently got to photograph at.
And they had the Dreyfus name scattered a little bit all over the house. So that’s something that you may be able to pick up in their photos on Airbnb. Then once you find that name, you can search it on Instagram. You can scroll on TikTok and then that’s how you’re going to actually get a DM for these Airbnb owners, right?
So that’s how you can be sneaky and then go directly through them. So I’m not saying like to bypass Airbnb or Peerspace platforms, but that’s how you may get access to an hourly rate for these branding sessions. Okay. So don’t tell them I told you that, but that’s just a key tip for you. And you just got to do some research and start investigating.
If you want it, go find it. Right. Okay. Let’s roll into another outdoor location idea. And this is, of course. That’s another very affordable option for photos, right? Typically local parks, trails, and streets are fair game for photos. Please, please be mindful of any permits or permissions needed. Once I think of a location, I try checking out Facebook groups and search that park to see if photographers have any trouble with their rangers or if permits are required.
This is where you can get really creative with family members yards or local hiking spots. Please be mindful though, that the weather is uncontrollable. Make sure to consider the temperature, the weather, and the crowds. I once planned a mini session date on a beach and It happened to be the same exact day that a marathon was going on.
Literally this huge Nike marathon thing was going on in California and it happened to be the same day as my mini session. So I had about six families that were on their way over the hill to take photos at the beach. And so thankfully I was able to contact them. We all still had service and I just, I changed the location the day of.
And this is something to consider when you are booking your branding session and working with clients. Or working with with yourself, right? Like having your own team there with you. Make sure that it isn’t some crowded space that’s just going to be a total headache, right? You can check out local event pages and even just being active in your community to ask about upcoming events will be so helpful.
These are things that moms know. I don’t know where they get this information, um, but neighbors and moms just typically know what’s going on. Um, and so definitely ask to see if there’s any festivals going on, any marathons or any things that we just may not be aware of, right? Another location, this is the last one for location ideas, are businesses.
Think of the coffee shops, resorts, restaurants, and types of businesses that aren’t our own, right? Like we don’t own these. Right? And this is why I said, like, office is separate than business here, because we could potentially own our offices, but our business, these businesses specifically, I’m not talking about something that is like your place of work.
This is a completely different business. We have to be careful with branding images because we are not just taking selfies or taking photos of our family and use, we are using these images to make money. And of course that comes at a cost for using their space. I highly encourage you to ask for permission before booking a photo shoot at a location like these, simply so you don’t get kicked out during your photo shoot or experience any awkward confrontations.
Personally, I love making genuine connections with venues, coffee shops, and businesses by sharing images with them. So they’re more likely to allow me to photograph there again. Right? So this is absolutely something to consider. Just ask. This is not something that you’re going to want to, to just do and then ask for forgiveness later.
I just don’t like confrontation like this, right? So being really proactive about that is key. So now that we have just gone over the different types of locations I’ve recommended, now I want to cover some more logistics and things to consider before selecting the best location for your brand shoot.
Let’s start with glam. Okay. So I feel like a lot of us get excited about the hair and makeup. Are you planning to do hair and makeup before your session? I suggest planning your hair and makeup squad to complete their glam. Like be done with everything, all hair, all makeup, no less than one hour prior to your photo shoot.
And that may seem kind of excessive. I have a background in wedding photography. I’ve been a wedding photographer for over 15 years. So trust me when it comes to timelines and buffers. I’m your girl. I got this, right? So it’s one of those just trust me moments, right? This allows for plenty of time for bathroom breaks, a snack, chatting with them as you say goodbye.
And then of course, allowing plenty of time to drive to your photo shoot if needed. Even if your location is only 10 minutes away, give yourself that hour, right? I’m telling you just, I would rather you sit in the parking lot, hang out in the AC in your car, chill for a couple minutes before you go in than ever be rushed.
These are scheduled as soon as you confirm your date and your next brand session. So as soon as you have a game plan and you are interested in booking your hair and your makeup team, get on that right away. Right? Another logistic to consider is lighting. Good natural light is key. makes the best photos.
I’m sorry. It’s just, it’s my opinion and it’s just the truth. Okay. You’re a photographer will be prepared with the right lighting they need, but nothing beats clean, natural light. Sometimes photos online can be deceiving. So consider doing a walkthrough at your desired location before booking. So if you are interested in booking that Airbnb, they don’t always allow a walkthrough.
So you have to be really strategic about, Hey, what does this really look like? Can I see lots of windows? Do I see sliders? What do the paintings on the wall look like, right? Is it dark? Um, and that may be something you’re going for, which is absolutely, that’s great, but just consider the types of how, like, how lighting is going to be bouncing off in that situation.
Consider the time of day for lighting to the sun rises on the East and it sets in the West. And yes, we all know this, but it’s important to consider the windows at your location and how bright or how low the lighting will be during your photo shoot. This also goes for a more like moody vibe too, right?
So maybe you prefer a more edgy and darker vibe, whatever you’re going for. Consider the lighting and the time of day for your photo shoot. I also want to add that just because you do something in a space, does it mean that your branding photos need to be taken there? So for example, if you’re a yoga instructor and you have a yoga studio, or maybe you’re a yoga teacher, you can absolutely take branding and content photos in your studio.
But I also want you to think bigger. Can you imagine if you were a yoga instructor having gorgeous. or just photos with your toes in the sand at the beach, right? Or imagine being like, I’m here in Arizona. Imagine being out in the desert and just having these gorgeous sunrise sessions and going through a, like a yoga flow or whatever they’re called.
Uh, I’m doing that with a beautiful desert background, right? It’s absolutely okay to take your branding photos and. Make a big like bigger pictures, right? Like take it and make it be a little bit more elaborate, a little bit more engaging. It’s okay to step outside of your workplace for better lighting.
Okay? Like I just I’m a fan of better lighting. Okay? Another logistic to consider is the weather. As I mentioned before, And it’s so important to mention it again. That’s why I’m bringing this up again. Make sure to think about a backup plan in case it rains, snows, or like here in Arizona, it’s too fricking hot to be in the heat of the summer.
These are things to consider, right? So making a game plan if anyone is uncomfortable, if you’re sweaty, make sure you pack lots of water. Sometimes we just have to take photos in the summer. I get it. I have done a couple of sunrise sessions this summer and they’re so beautiful. The sky is beautiful.
Gorgeous. It’s worth it. There’s nobody on the trails at literally the ball crack of dawn, right? So just something to consider, but make that plan, right? Have that backup plan. Another logistic to consider is exclusivity. Something else to think about when planning your location is what’s the vibe like with how many people will be around.
Are you planning a busy coffee shop with looky loos watching you? Does your Airbnb offer a shared space? So maybe during your photo shoots. Some random guy comes out to make a cup of noodle in the kitchen while you’re trying to take pictures. Right. So what does that look like? That would be horrifying.
And if you’re already feeling nauseous and nervous about your brand shoot, and you know, you’re worried about booking that location with lots of people that probably wouldn’t be a good fit for you. Right. So I would definitely consider investing in possibly a studio or in your own home or at a friend’s home that you can control.
Right. And also too, I forgot to mention this as well. When you are considering a home session, if you have pets, if you have children or other people in your home that may be distracting, this is your sign to hire a pet sitter or to create some type of game plan for anyone or anything in your home or in these locations that may be distracting.
Okay. Thank you. Okay. Parking. Okay. This is the last logistic and, uh, this, like, this is definitely sharing a glimpse of my personality and why I love the Wild West and suburbia so much. I hate struggling to find parking. No, thank you. When picking a location, especially on a time crunch for a rental time, consider the parking and buffering for more time if needed.
Okay. This is so important. I won’t say it’s the last thing, so it’s the least important, but it is something to consider, um, especially if you have a team that is joining you and what does that look like, right? Like, I love things to be simplified and to be well planned out. And finding parking for my branding session is not on my list of things, especially when I have a whole bunch of stuff to carry, bags to lug in, all this stuff, like, no thanks, right?
All right, my love, I’m ready when you are to start planning your branding session. Okay. The power hour is perfect for it intentionally and impactful session. It’s just one hour at one location and the crush your content. Three hour experience is best for the business owners. That’s ready for a whole content day packed with professional photos, B roll and lots of creativity flowing.
As your photographer, I love brainstorming with you to find the perfect environment and location for your branding session.
