Hey, gorgeous. Welcome back to Quianna Marie Weekly. Today we’re diving into a little this or that conversations that I see both business owners struggle with all the time, DIY content or professional brand photos. Which one is better? Which one should you invest in first? And do you really need both? As a brand photographer, content coach, and someone who helps business owners show up confidently online and in real life?
I see this decision play out every single day. Some people think they should only post casual and easy, simple iPhone content, keeping it real and authentic. Others think they need to wait until they can afford a full branding session before posting anything. But the truth is your business actually thrives when you have both DIY.
Content builds connection. Professional photos build authority. As always, I love a good example and story to back up these coaching moments. Right now it’s trending on social media to have a theory, the chair theory, right? All about finding friends that always make sure you have a seat at the table. The coffee theory that shares the importance of having different friends at different stages of life to grab a coffee with, share their wisdom and experiences through all of the stages of your life.
There’s literally a ferry for everything. And since we’re chatting about fairies, I have my own theory that I like to call the pilot theory. Imagine having a friend from high school that booked your ticket to fly on a small charter plane. The plan is to grab dinner and watch the sunset along the California coast.
Epic views a glass of wine in your hand amongst the clouds and the bird’s eye view of a lifetime. The only catch is that she says her brother is flying the plane. Imagine that the only memories you have of her brother was carpool days in middle school. Another friend of yours having a crush on him and going to a school dance together.
There’s literally no memories or no proof or any reason why you would trust her brother to fly you, right? Like just think about that, right? Like we have those old besties from high school and we think of their brothers, and would you ever trust any of them to fly you in an airplane, right? That may give you some trust issues, wondering, is this even safe?
Now, what if the story changed and you felt a sigh of relief because you knew her brother graduated and went into the Air Force. You remember seeing Facebook posts of their mom posting videos of the blue angels pointing up to the tiny blue airplanes flying like synchronized swimmers in the sky yelling, that’s my baby.
Like, you’ve seen those on Facebook, so of course it’s real. Right? As a kid, you remember family photos in their hallway of their dad and grandfather as pilots, and even remember that your friend missed your 23rd birthday party because she was with her family when her brother was pinned with a higher ranking in the Air Force.
You’ve seen the photos, the videos, and you’ve heard the stories. Wouldn’t that make you feel 10 times safer knowing that her brother is legit? I hope this is starting to ring a bell for you because darling, you are the pilot of your business. You are in charge of your presentation and your reputation.
It’s up to you to share your expertise, to share your value, and prove why you are the best option to work with. People need to see the results. The daily business grind, not only know what you do, but trust you. That’s why I love to call this the pilot theory. So today I wanna walk you through a few key differences between DIY content and professional brand photos, why they both matter and how they work together to help you attract more clients.
So let’s start with number one, consistent versus professional. So, DIY content is what keeps your business visible every day. This is the behind the scenes stuff. Cleaning your gear, organize your tools of the trade. Packing an order editing photos, walking your dogs, watering your plants, meeting the client for coffee, typing up emails or chatting on the phone, sharing pieces of your client experience.
These small moments help your audience feel like they know you. DIY content says, come along with me while I run my business. But professional branding, photos, elevate your business visually. They show you as the expert polished content tells potential clients, wow, this brand is established. They’re confident.
They know what they’re doing, right? If you’ve ever wanted your clients to trust you to feel legit, a professional branding session helps bring those visuals and all that validation to life. So think of it like this, DIY content equals consistency and brand photos equals professionalism. Your business needs both visibility and authority.
Alright, number two here, everyday moments versus signature visuals. Your DIY content captures the real life moments of your business, the things happening daily that make your brand human and relatable. But brand sessions are where we create your signature visuals. These are the photos that anchor your brand.
The ones that go on your website, sales pages, speaker bios, social profiles, right? Like let’s update that profile picture, marketing materials, promos, launches, all of it. They help people immediately understand who you are and what you do. DIY content tells the ongoing story. Brand photos create that first impression.
And in marketing, first impressions matter a lot. This is why I’m obsessed with both iPhone content from behind the scenes and legit branding images with a professional photographer, in my opinion, professional brand sessions tell people what you do, DIY content taken with your phone, shows people what you’re actually doing.
It’s like we get to curate our story, how we want to be perceived and level up our first impressions with a brand session, but still keep it real with the daily grind. And number three. Quick content versus strategic content. DIY Content is fast. You can film it in minutes on your phone. It’s spontaneous and flexible, which is why it’s perfect for social media.
But brand sessions are strategic. We’re planning outfits, locations, messaging, all the marketing captions, content, like all of the stuff that we like to talk about, instead of just getting those snaps of visuals. Right. We’re going to go over the props, the exact story your business is telling everything.
Everything is intentional. This is why I’m obsessed with branding photos because we have the opportunity to not just share where we’ve been. We get to share who we are now, and we also get to shine light on what’s coming in the future, right? Like we literally get to make this. Evolution come to life in front of our eyes.
We get to curate it. It’s up to us to design the life and business we want. So when someone lands on your website or Instagram, they immediately understand your brand because you have put that thought, effort, intentionality into creating that rant of who you are and who you’re becoming. Think of DIY content as daily storytelling.
Brand photos as strategic marketing assets. Okay, number four here. Starting point versus growth stage. Okay, so if you’re just starting out in business, DIY, content is honestly the best place to begin. It helps you practice showing up. You learn your voice, you learn your audience, you learn what resonates.
But as your business grows, there comes a moment when your visuals need to grow with you. When you’re raising prices, launching offers, pitching yourself for opportunities, hosting events, or taking stages. Professional visuals become incredibly powerful. They help your brand match the level of business you are building.
One of my business besties, Steph, is launching something new and just booked another branding session to feature her speaker clients and continue to grow her speaking community. Steph is an incredible videographer and even she knows the power of professional images. Yes, we’ll be taking a ton of B-roll and behind the scene video clips for our shoot together, but those are just as important as the high quality professional photos.
She’ll have those photos to use for her community graphics, sales pages, launches, and promos for upcoming events. Steph is incredible with marketing for her business, and I know she’ll share a fricking masterclass on how to utilize and maximize our shoot together. Make sure to follow along with Steph at Steph Do worth on Insta.
She’s always posting really fun things and if you need video or anything like that in Phoenix or beyond, she travels, uh, make sure to contact Steph for that. Alright, so number five here. Okay, this is like where all comes together. DIY content leads to brand sessions. Here’s something I see all the time.
Someone starts creating simple content for their business. They gain some confidence. They start attracting attention. They may be getting some new followers and new inquiries, and they begin booking clients and eventually they realized, oh wow, okay, my business is growing. I want visuals that reflect this level.
That’s where brand sessions come in. DIY content helps you start showing up. Professional brand photos help you step fully into your next level. Do you see how it’s all full circle here? Like it’s basically what came first? The chicken or the egg? Like there’s no right answer. We need both, right? They both feed into each other.
They help us maintain and one helps us grow. They’re both equally important. If you’ve been wanting to create more content but feel stuck on what to film, I actually created a mini training called Book More With B-Roll, it walks you through exactly what to film so you can create weeks of content in one afternoon using simple behind the scenes clips from your everyday business.
You’re already doing the work, you are already doing it. We just need to record it. If you’re at the stage when you’re ready to elevate your brand visually and create an entire library of professional content, that’s what we do during my brand sessions and content days. Circling back to the pilot theory, now that you clearly understand the importance of both DIY content and professional photos, I want you to think about your friend’s brother, the pilot.
If you only had iPhone photos and videos him flying, of course you would have a nudge of trust that he’s actually capable of flying. And I’m not even mentioning AI here. By the way, please let us all just assume that those video clips are real, okay? That can open up a whole new can of worms. Now, imagine also seeing professional photos taking of him near his plane as part of the Air Force professional photos of his pinning awards for him in the armed forces with his Air Force team.
Imagine someone searching for you on the internet. They’re Googling, they’re searching on chat, GPT, asking their friends for referrals, and even asking Alexa in their kitchen for your services, how are you popping up if they have the opportunity to find you, which I hope they do. I hope you are searchable.
Do you have both types of content? Are you presenting yourself as a professional? As a legit business, are you adding filters to every post and showing up as a hot mess express, or are you blending the two as equal parts professional with authority and daily actions that keep your business running? The secret to marketing your business in 2026 is to run your personal brand with both.
At the end of the day, this isn’t about choosing DIY or professional. It’s about using both intentionally. Show up consistently. Tell your story. Let people see the real heart and your expertise behind the scenes. And when you’re ready to step into the next level of your brand, invest in visuals that match the business you’re building.
Because when your content and your brand visuals work together, that’s when the magic really happens. So here’s the big takeaway from today’s episode. You don’t have to choose between DIY content or professional brand photos. The magic happens when you use both intentionally. If you’re sitting there thinking, okay, Kiana, I know I need to show up online more, but I still don’t know what to film.
That’s exactly why I created my book More with B-Roll Mini course. This is for the business owner who wants to start showing up today with simple behind the scenes content that actually attracts clients. Inside this training, I walk you through exactly what to film, how to capture B roll quickly with your phone, and how to turn those everyday moments in two weeks of scroll, stopping content, no fancy equipment, no complicated editing, just a simple system to help you stay visible and build trust online.
So if you’re ready to stop overthinking content and start showing up consistently, the book More with B-roll mini course is the perfect place to start. But maybe you’re listening to this episode thinking something different. Maybe you’re saying, my business has grown. I’m ready to level the F up. I want visuals that actually reflect who I am now and the business I’m proud of running.
That’s where my personal branding sessions come in. These sessions are designed to create an entire content library of professional images and video so you can confidently show up on your website, social media, with all of your marketing materials and beyond. This is for the entrepreneur who’s ready to step fully into their next level with visuals that position them as the expert that you already are.
Because the longer you stay hidden, the harder it is for your dream clients to find you. And I truly believe that when you have the right photos and the right content strategy, your confidence skyrockets through the fricking roof, and so do your bookings. So whether you’re ready to start filming simple B roll content this week, or you’re ready to book a full brand session and create an elevated visual presence, I have got you.
