Welcome back, babe, I am so pumped for today’s conversation because I am living on a high from this weekend’s event, the powerhouse Women event hosted by Lindsey Swartz and her incredible community and her beautiful team of honestly, it just really awesome powerhouse women and a couple of men that are making an impact and changing the world. And by the time you actually hear this, it’ll be quite a few weeks after I’ve been so proud of myself staying ahead of the game, and like busting out some of these episodes in advance.
But I wanted to capture the magic of this and what I’m feeling right now, if you have attended an event, whether it be a conference, or a workshop, or some type of gathering, you know about that high vibe, energy, and it’s contagious. It’s fun. And so I really wanted to record this episode today so we can capture it and share more about it. So for today’s episode, I thought it’d be really fun to break down the power of events and conferences, and why I prioritize them in my business.
Honestly my life like it’s just a part of my life. Now I am a workshop a Holic. I love education. And I love putting myself in rooms where I am just a sponge, I am here to learn, I’m here to grow. I’m actually one of those weirdos that likes to be a little bit out of my comfort zone. But still, you know, always learning I’m a forever learner.
So today, I’m going to break down 10 reasons why you should consider attending a real live conference and event. And then I’m also going to break down all the nitty gritty stuff on how to actually find them, how much they cost, what what did these investments will look like. And just some fun kind of tips that I’ve learned through the years and some fun things that you can implement with your business. Okay, so how are you doing? I want to ask you, like, how are you doing, babe?
I want to do a quick little check in I have been having so much fun with these connection calls recently interviewing some of my favorite humans and some of the souls that I just really look up to. They’re my mentors and my coaches and my soul sisters, and I am having fun with these. So let me know if you’re resonating with these guests. I hope you’re reaching out to them. If you have any questions or you’d like me to make a connection for you, please let me know.
Okay, so without further ado, let’s crank out the power of events and conferences. Let’s go baby. Come join me for a dance party ready loves though. What’s keeping you safe is keeping you stuck. Whoo.
This was a quote from Amy Porterfield at the recent powerhouse Women event here in Scottsdale, Arizona. And I’m just so frickin happy that I actually got to I technically didn’t get to meet Amy. But she was on stage. She walked by me in her beautiful pink suit. And it was a vibe. And this quote really stuck with me. It just kind of made me realize like, whoa, yes, like I’m in my comfort zone.
Some of us may be feeling this way too, specially after coming out of 2020 and kind of slowly dipping into larger arenas or larger groups of people that it can be kind of scary, right as we are slowly kind of shifting back into. I don’t wanna say what life used to be before but we are definitely gathering and celebrating and attending events.
So if you’re in a position where you’re thinking, Okay, I think it’s time for me to show up. Let’s break down 10 reasons why I think you should run to the next local or hop on a plane, buy that ticket and get yourself out of town. So you can experience your very next conference. Okay, so let’s roll out 10 reasons why I love them. Number one, meet new friends from across the country, maybe even globally.
I want you to think about this for a second. We constantly have the opportunity to meet new friends whether it’s picking up one of your kids in the little playground area, you meet a new mommy friend, you connect. You know, we’re meeting new friends at our bar classes are like our workout classes, or maybe our new neighbors like we’re constantly meeting new people. Right? And I think that is a beautiful thing.
I always want to encourage those friendships and those relationships. But there’s something to say about meeting people that share you your same passions, you know, other business owners, other creatives, other people that do what you do.
I know that especially in the online space, or in the service based business, we are not like always near people that get it right. Like we can, we can have our family and friends that support us, and they love us unconditionally. But we really can’t undo an air quotes really can’t talk shop with the ones that are going to see us where we are, love us and help get us to that next level.
Okay, so this is why I love going to these types of events. Because you really, truly get to meet new friends and I say it, I say it with all heart and all of my integrity that they’re your people. Okay, so I have met some of my lifelong friends. But I could not imagine being on this business, like this business journey without them. And it’s because I’ve attended workshops and events and conferences, literally around the country.
That was a long number one, but it really in to sum it up is a way for you to meet new friends number to learn lots, you are going to these events and to these conferences to be educated, okay. But here’s another piece of that, that I actually like I need to share with you right now that it’s not always about learning new things. And I don’t want to sound stuck up about this, or I don’t want to sound conceited. But there’s also a piece of that where you are validating your mission, your passions, and your business plans.
I want that to really sink in for a second because I don’t want that to come across. Like, I’m a know it all, or I know everything. I am a forever learner. And I love love education and learning new things. But there is a piece of that, where you are put in the room, it could be a tiny room, a small event of a dozen people or there could be hundreds or 1000s of people at this event.
Just knowing that you’re on the right track, just that nudge or that reminder that when someone asks a question, and you can kind of answer in your head quickly, right, you’re like, Oh, I think I know the answer to that. Right? It gives you the opportunity to be reminded that you know what you’re doing, and that that validation is there. And I think that is a beautiful thing, you’re not going to get that meeting your high school friends, at a birthday party for your kids, or at a coffee shop with a new friend.
You’re just you’re not gonna get that validation that you’re on the right track, based on those conversations, right. So like, once again, I always have a caveat like those conversations need to happen. Those are a part of your daily life. And that’s what makes you you and make you really proud of your friends and your family. But when you are put in a room where you are reminded, oh yeah, I got this, that is something that I’m telling you right now only happens at these events, okay, so that, that’s why you should be going.
Okay, number three, get yourself outside of your comfort zone.
This is a powerful one. Because I know a lot of us listening, we are so happy when plans get cancelled. And we would prefer to just pop our earbuds in and walk around the neighborhood with our dog. We don’t need to see anybody, right.
But I think this is a beautiful, beautiful, safe space at these conferences and events, to test those limits, right to get yourself out there, meet new people, try new things, try new foods, maybe even explore new cities, right? That’s one thing that I made sure to implement.
A couple years ago, when I would travel for these events. I would always cut it so close. I would like if the event was on a let’s just say like a Monday through Wednesday, right? Like Monday night meet and greet, education and event all day Tuesday, and then maybe like a half day Wednesday, I’m just making something up, right. I would literally fly in. If I couldn’t fly in that Sunday night for any reason I would fly in that Monday morning. check into the hotel, possibly meet up with a group of friends that are also attending the event, grab lunch with them, maybe do a Photoshop, a photo swap for headshots, and then go to the event and I would fly out that night. Now I’m saying that because I’m like a baller on a budget over here.
I didn’t want to spend the extra money for two nights in a hotel or tack on those extra days for a rental car or extra Ubers like I was on a budget and I still am, let’s be honest, but I was on a budget to make sure that I was staying on track. But I mean, I was I had conferences that I was going to in Louisiana I was in downtown Nola for one of the rising tide leaders events. I mean, I’ve been in downtown Austin. I’ve been to like all places around the country.
Fredericksburg. I am about to go and explore George Washington’s house with my aunt’s when I was there for at the time Hope Taylor was local that was her hometown was Fredericksburg, Virginia. And so I can didn’t explore that, like there was so much history there. And so anyway, I’m going on a tangent to remind you that if you have the opportunity to go to these events, get outside of your comfort zone and explore this is the best, like permission slip, or just a reminder to make the best of that time.
Number four, embrace the in between moments.
Okay, so what I mean by this is, you know, you’re already putting yourself out there, you’re making new friends. But truly immerse yourself in those like lunchtime conversations, those coffee chats early before, if you notice, maybe the event has a Facebook group or some type of community group where people are chatting, and they’re going out to drinks after you may be so exhausted, trust me, I know, as an introverted extrovert, when I’m done, I’m done. But this is your challenge to go. Even if you don’t drink, even if you just want to roll with a Shirley Temple, like I do that, like, that’s totally fine.
Put yourself in those rooms and make those connections. I love like I live for those elevator conversations. I live for those Uber rides with just one or two other attendees from the event. Or, you know, sometimes they’ll offer like a sunrise hike or yoga sash that sometimes for these events are optional. Go like I challenge you to go because it’s in those in between moments that you’re going to pick up little connections, you’re gonna get introductions to new people and new friends. And I personally believe that’s when the magic really happens at these conferences and events, right.
So, I mean, if you have to, if you have to take some downtime, please like, honor your body, honor yourself, and take care of that, right. But going back to your comfort zone like this is the time to really get out of that comfort zone. And embrace those in between moments.
Number five, events are a great opportunity for you to be introduced to new leaders, mentors, and coaches. This is why I’m obsessed with these opportunities. Because you may have seen someone maybe they were like on the the leader lineup, right? And or like the speaking list, and you’re you’re thinking, oh, gosh, yes, I cannot wait to meet her or he has such an amazing story and such an amazing company. And oh my gosh, like I cannot wait to meet that one person. Or maybe there’s a couple on your list that you’re really excited to meet. I love being pleasantly surprised that they’re always a handful of speakers that I had no idea existed, I wasn’t following them on social media, I have no idea who they are. But they’re a big deal, right.
I think this is a beautiful reminder that we need to get out of our comfort zone, we need to expand our horizons and expand our networks. Because you never know who you’re going to meet. And it could be someone sitting next to you. It could be someone in line in the bathroom, or it could be someone on stage. Okay, so like having those moments of clarity that. And those moments of opportunity that you’re going to meet someone that quite literally could change your life could change the way you think, and can change the way you operate your business.
It’s just so fun to meeting these new leaders.
Number six new book recommendations. Okay, so like this is kind of a silly one. But I’m not even joking, where I think almost every speech or everyone on stage mentions a book. And it’s not always the book that they wrote, like, I’m like, I am so proud of my friends, and coaches and leaders and mentors that are writing their own books that I am so proud of. And I’m just so thankful to support them and post about them and share and obviously read them. But there’s always little hidden nuggets, or just kind of like I would call them like mic drop moments where they mentioned books, and I love it. I love getting book recommendations, I add them to my list.
So I actually have a book of it’s under my favorites list. Make sure to check that out because I have a ton of the self help books like money mindset, books, all things business life, and also some fun just kind of light reading like I call them like poolside readings, right? So definitely check out that favorites list. And just I literally don’t go to these conferences just to get book recommendations, but it’s definitely one of my kind of hidden gems that I love.
Number seven, creating intentional time for you, creating time for you to help your business. Move forward. Take those steps that you need and truly move the needle in your business. Release those blocks and prioritize your time effort and business goals. This is the time for you babe. Okay, like I know that self care is such a hot topic right now and people are investing in In mindset coaches and massages, and you know, really being really taking the making yourself a priority is trending right now. And I am all for that. And I add conferences and events in that same bucket of self care.
Now, I don’t have a family yet. I mean, obviously, I have a family, but I’m not married yet. I don’t have my own children that I’m juggling, I really just have my puppy Faith. And my boyfriend Mike and his dogs guy like that’s like our little crew right now, right. And, of course, my extended family that I love spending time with.
But I am super intentional about making this time, because it really allows me to kind of like going over like time warp. Like I just kind of pretend like life stops when I’m at these events. Obviously, it’s not true. But you know, these things happen. And I just think that it’s a really great time to put yourself first, leave the babies at home, or maybe bring them with you, if you happen to be breastfeeding or something. I’ve seen that before. It’s very common for moms to have the little ones they’re kind of off to the side. But dads are grandmas it’s very normal.
So if you are in that season, just know that I would say the right crowd would be very welcoming and open to that, of course. But leave your cat at home and receive really this should have been the title of number seven is receive, this is your time to open your arms.
Baby, you are always pouring so much of your love of your attention of your grace, and just so much of your like helping heart into other people, it’s time for you to sit down and just sit there and feel loved, appreciated and just learned so much. Okay. So that’s why I always prioritize these two is like, you know, we cannot get from an empty cup, you know that you’ve heard that a million times. But this is your reminder that this is a safe place to do that and to truly fill your cup.
Number eight, practice your elevator pitch. Okay, so before we go on with an elevator pitch, I want to actually define that. Okay, so we you may have heard this before, and you know, oh, yeah, that’s when you tell about yourself and you share about your business. But what is the origin of that. So hold the elevator pitch actually is
think of when you are popping into an elevator, and you are going up flights of you know, flights or floors. And you don’t know if you’re gonna get off on the third, fourth, or fifth or sixth, whatever that is, but you only have the undivided attention, whoever is in that elevator that asks you, oh, so tell me tell me what you do. Tell me about yourself. And this is the perfect time for you to share within 30 seconds or less, because you don’t know when that person is getting off the elevator they can only go into.
I mean, they could be one of those people that only go to the second floor, right? Like you don’t know, but or they could be going to the 20th floor, you don’t know how much time you have. So you need to cram the most like potent information about yourself and who you are, what you do, and how you help them, like how you help your clients in like the fastest time ever.
Okay, so now that you have that in mind, this is the perfect time when you’re attending these events and conferences to fine tune that to laser focus and introduction for yourself with who you are becoming and what you’re offering today. Now, this is so important to almost do like a little like, kind of like, recap, or like refresh on exactly who you are today. And like how you are influencing these people, right?
I think this is so important. Because how many times have you introduced yourself when you are experiencing a pivot or you’re experiencing something new in your business or maybe creating a new offer? Then you’re thinking, Well, I’ve done this for 15 years, or I’ve done this for five years. And you kind of explain that. And then you’re like, and this is what I’m doing now.
So I challenge you to skip right to the what’s happening now, skip right to what you have going on in your business today. Maybe even what’s coming, you know, in the near future. So let’s say for example, you have a part time job and you’re a yoga student, but you are really, really loving tapping into your intuitive coaching, okay? Don’t even tell them that your yoga teacher literally just skip right to it and just claim it. claim that you’re an intuitive Coach. And this is how you help your clients.
This is who you best serve, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. And then and then once the conversation gets going, you can say, oh, yeah, and I’m currently teaching yoga here. It’s helped me gain this experience, yada, yada yada. Do you see where I’m going with this? So I feel like this is such us special time that you can carve out to practice this, okay? Because this is just going to open so many doors for you and help you and honestly like this is what’s really fun about these conferences and events.
You’re going to be meeting dozens of people you’re going to either be I don’t want to say like forced introduction, but like, maybe part of the event. They’re going to tell you to turn to your neighbor And maybe there’s activities to do or introduction games or something like that, which sounds like a nightmare to most of us, right? But it is really a great opportunity to grow. And to reformat that introduction. Okay, so that was a long number eight, but just really a great opportunity to do that and practice your elevator pitch.
So I would love because I love challenges, I would love for you to think about that. Jot it down, like scrap what you have told someone if I were to ask you today, so tell me about yourself? Or tell me about your business? What what do you do? Right? Like everyone hates that question. But this is the perfect time to edit it, okay to like, update it. Okay, so I challenge you to write it out, maybe update your Instagram bio, if it hasn’t been, you know, touched in a while, maybe it’s a little dusty, and it needs a little updating. Practice.
Number nine, study, the speaker’s registration forms, the funnels and the operating systems of the event. Okay, so this is like a really long one. And I don’t want to go too far into this. But I’m literally crazy. And I love researching and checking everything from the links. So like, let’s say I sign up for registration.
I want to know what company or what website there are program or something that they are offering those like registration pages, and those sales pages like I am such a stalker, like I just I want to know how these things are functioning. And I think like, I want to share this with you now. So as you continue going to conferences and events and investing in education, if you are in the business to eventually maybe create some online offers or get into the online sales space, this is the perfect, perfect opportunity for you to stock and learn. Okay, it’s not to be judgey about it. Like there’s no judgment on this at all.
I don’t want to I don’t want that to come up for you. But I think it’s just so important to learn, like, what they’re using and how they’re using it. And so going back to that’s kind of like the tech part, right of like, their operating systems and how are they operating? I mean, do you have name tags that have your name printed on them with your photo? I know, I just recently attended the graceful gathering. It was such a beautiful event put on by the cannons. And you know, they had the personal touch of having my headshot, like all the attendees, like had their photo on the name tags. Whoa, so special, right? Then I just attended the most recent powerhouse women events, and they had lanyards with your name. And then you wrote your name on with a sharpie, right?
Which I mean, that’s absolutely totally fine. Like it added that touch of element, you can read it in your own handwriting. And it was, I mean, they literally had hundreds of people that were attending. So like, there’s just different ways of doing things. Right. So studying how that plays out. And then I really love studying the speakers.
Yes, I’m there to learn and to soak things in, I’ve already reminded you that this is your season of receiving and especially at these conferences, like it’s a time to just sit there and just truly be poured into. But you know, me, I just can’t sit there without studying things and learning. And so I love learning the format of the speakers, right? Like, you know, how are they delivering their story? Or do they have any like cliffhangers or you know, what about certain speakers?
Am I hanging on to every word and others I’m kind of like dozing off, right, like so what, what is it about them and how they’re delivering their speech? What are they wearing? You know, I actually have a very, very fond memory of my friend Natalie Franke.
She popped onto the stage once or she’s done it all the time. But one time specifically, she was speaking at a show it conference here in Arizona, and she popped on in her jeans. She had nice dark jeans. And I would say like a nice top right. And I just remember thinking like that’s sweet. Like that’s weird. Like usually, usually speakers are very glitzy they have like a fancy blazer on.
They have like a super trendy romper, right like they like they are very elevated in the way they dress. And she actually addressed it sharing in one of her speeches, she’s done quite a few that totally resonate and that I really really relate to but she even mentioned that she wanted to hold like a whole heartedly show up as herself and she felt most comfortable delivering her message in jeans. And to be perfectly honest that once again because I just I just fell in love with Natalie every time I see her and spend time with her.
But it really resonated with me as a reminder to truly be myself. Right to like, it’s okay that I wear my cowboy boots to photoshoots or that I wear them often. You know like I love them. And it’s a piece of me And so, so what I’m getting at about the study the speakers and not just what they’re speaking like how they’re delivering their speech and what they’re wearing, but how they carry themselves, right? We’re always learning from that. And like I said, we’re not judging them or learning from them. And this obviously is a great space to do that. Okay, almost done with our list.
Number 10. Events and Conferences, spark a ton of ideas. Now, this is literally like, just imagine your brain having little fireworks that pop, pop, pop, pop, pop pop that go off and off and off. This is literally the mecca of where these ideas come from, right. Like, think of like all of your shower thoughts, and all of the shots of you like all the thoughts that you’re getting, you know, right before you go to bed, like you know, whatever, you get your biggest ideas on long road trips, or whatever.
I feel like they’re just magnified at conferences. This is where you are picking up new workflows, tech tips, and tons of education. This is your reminder to write them all down, you may think, Oh, I’m gonna remember that. And you’re not gonna remember it, okay? Like this is years and years of, of experience with these events, like, just jot it down, write it down, send yourself voice memos, okay.
If that’s helpful to you, after the fact, definitely review your notes and go through, you’re kind of like, I call it like my chicken scratch, right. Because in the moment, you’re like, trying to write things down quickly. And, you know, sometimes I’m like, drawing little pictures in my notes or something, and to help remind me, and so please take the time, after the conference to you know, maybe you’re in the rental car, or you are, you know, in the hotel room, before we pack up and really leave.
Maybe the moment you get home, whatever is best for you. But like, definitely review those notes, go through everything. And then if anything is unclear, make more notes or like kind of create an A next page of like, review notes and just start fresh as you kind of like, go through everything. So you can add extra context to those thoughts, and those tech tips and ideas and platforms. And just, you know, other mentors that are mentioned that you want to reach out.
Sometimes too, because I’m so sneaky, of course, the speakers will actually mention their mentors, like they’ll just drop a name in there. And oftentimes, I have no idea who those people are. But they’re the ones that are mentoring my mentors, right. So you want to make sure that you’re jotting those names down. So you can go stalk them, so you can be their friend or a follower, and learn from them, too. If you find the right event and conferences, each time you will leave as a different version of yourself. And I wholeheartedly believe that.
Okay, so let’s get into how do you find these events? All right, so the biggest tip I have for this, and really the only tip I have is ask, you need to start asking. So a couple ways you can do that is by scrolling through Instagram, to easily find local online events, right? So like, you know, you’re going to be finding these sponsored posts, okay, like, especially if you are posting a lot of content about your niche, or your industry or you know, your offers, you’re going to be targeted. And I think that’s a beautiful thing. Actually, I’m not complaining about that.
So you are going to find just ads that are directing to these events. But how do you know if those are even going to be good? If they’re going to be your people, they’re going to be weirdos, they’re going to be stuck up, if they’re going to actually help you or like, bring you closer to where you want to be in your business. Right. So how do you find them? Like, how do you fine tune them? So obviously, right away, I would just ask my friends. Now I say that because I’ve done the conference route for years. So a lot of my friends went to conferences, right? So this is kind of full circle.
I wouldn’t ask your best friend since the third grade about these opportunities, right? She probably doesn’t know. So when I say ask your friends, ask your peers. Okay, so if you’ve attended a rising tide, Tuesdays together, meet up and you met a couple local, either photographers or any other businesses in your industry, like reach out to them.
Okay. Then if you’re thinking, like, I have no friends in the industry, like I don’t know, maybe you move to a new town or maybe you are just cracking into this new business and you don’t have a lot of friends in the industry. Totally fine. Like we all start somewhere. So I suggest actually scrolling through Instagram. So search some hashtags. For now here’s the kicker, most people would advise you to just go find these events. I actually advise you to go a step deeper and reach out to other if you’re a photographer, reach out to other photographers, if you’re a mindset coach, reach out to other mindset coaches, if you are planning on writing a book, reach out to other authors.
Okay, so like start there and engage with them so it doesn’t feel like a cold DM right, like engage with them like their stuff and pop into their inbox and just say, hey, I really respect your content. I think it’s beautiful. I’ve learned a lot already. I would like to ask you and just be so blunt about it just be like, I’m interested in attending an event.
Do you have any favorites? Or what is the one event that you prioritize attending every single year, I’d love to get into, I don’t know, get into the circle of conferences or something like whatever feels aligned with you, and like your verbiage and what you say, just start with that, okay? And open the door to that not only are you You know, some people are going to ignore you. Some people don’t check their DMS or aren’t on top of them as much, which is totally fine. Don’t let that discourage you. But definitely like, either a follow up or just continue asking new people. And what you’re going to find is people will say, like, they’ll share what they love, right?
So if you so for example, if you see a conference, or like an online summit pop up on your feed, and you’re thinking, Oh, wow, this looks great. But then the people that you are in the DMS or you’re making friends with maybe aren’t suggesting that they may not know about it, which is possible, the World Wide Web is humongous, obviously, it’s so not all of us know, everything that’s popping up. But you’re gonna find those either local or national events that they look forward to every year that they highly recommend. And that’s where I would start.
So definitely ask some events are annual that happen every year, some pop up occasionally, and others are like a one hit wonder. So there’s going to be those events that are just, you know, they’re huge, and they’re, they’re big, and they happen every single year, I’ve even attended events that were like one hit wonders where they, you know, maybe 2020, slowed things down, and they never recuperated from that, something like that. That happens, but they’re out there. Okay, so we just got to find them. And then I also wanted to bring, bring to your attention to and just kind of wrap up this episode about conferences and events is how many should they cost?
Okay, I want to be so transparent and realistic with you that these events can start as a low ticket anywhere from about $200. And they can be upwards of $2,000. Okay, so and that’s not including, like, if you’re really lucky to be in a hometown or semi close. Your hometown is kind of close to the big city, where these events are taking place, like you’re so lucky, like, take advantage of the local events. Because oftentimes, whether they’re your mentors or coaches, and they’re hosting masterminds, and retreats, and workshops and conferences, I mean, you have to fly there, like you actually have to buy.
You have to purchase flights and accommodations, your hotel rental cars, and of course, new outfits. I don’t know why we are this way. But of course, we need a new outfit or new pajamas for this, like this sleepover event with our friends, right?
So just keep that in mind. Keep that a part of your budget. I know personally, I’ve spent over $50,000 in the last, I don’t even want to say a couple years really, in conferences and events because I prioritize it. Like I know that I would not be where I am in my business without creating these deep genuine friendships with other industry leaders, industry peers. And all this was fueled from conferences and events. Okay, so one of the best ways like Amy Porterfield mentioned before about, you know, what’s keeping you safe is keeping you stuck. attending conferences and events will help you. Like, I’m trying to create like an unsticky sound. Sorry, that’s not very pretty, but like it will help you feel unstuck.
