Jennifer Miranda
Thank you for having me. I’m so excited.
Jennifer Miranda
Yes, well, let’s just dive right in. I have some juicy questions for you. And I would love to know, what are some of the biggest mistakes business owners make with their website.
Jennifer Miranda
All right, so I have a couple for you. And the first one is definitely going to be the balance throughout the entire page. So you want all of your pages to look similar and look different, if that makes sense. And having a healthy balance will really help that. And I see that is like a red flag a lot of people it’s either cookie cutter the same page all across or completely different people, when you go from the homepage to the about page, it’s like, well, the design is way different over here.
So balance in that for sure. Another one I will say is having cohesive photos, you want to look like the same person and a lot of in your photos, right? You don’t want pictures from 10 years ago, and you no longer look like that. Or you could be just in a different season of life when that picture was taken. And you really want to have cohesive photos so they can get to know you they want to recognize you. And I would say another mistake people make is lack of page animations or too many page animations.
So these subtle, subtle animations can really make your page pop. And I’ll give you an example of that. It’s if you have a link and you’re on a computer and you’re using a mouse and you kind of hover over that link, there’s a subtle page animation that can happen. And that could be the font gets bolder, or the font gets smaller or whatever is your liking. Right but having a little those animations throughout your page without overdoing it, right. We don’t want to go on your page and like boom, things are just flowing and flying and moving. And it’s just crazy. So again, I think it goes to balance but balancing those animations for sure.
Jennifer Miranda
I love that well and I love how you mentioned to kind of like the client journey of your homepage, your about me page. And you mentioned the balance which I think is beautiful because you you want each page to be unique, right? Because that is exactly what you’re trying to share or you’re describing for the client. But can you I this is like just The question I made up now, like, what are some pages that must be on every website? Like, do you need a whole bunch? Or do you just need a couple like must haves?
Jennifer Miranda
You know, I think it really depends what you’re doing and what your goal is. And that goes along with your brand strategy and what your end goal is for this website. So having an established and goal before you design a website is crucial. But for like a personal brand, let’s use a photographer, I definitely think they’re going to want to see your portfolio, they’re going to want to see your work and what you’ve done and what you can do.
They’re also going to want to know about you. But I do think that that might come as a secondary page, right? So if I was creating the order of them, I do a homepage, I would do a portfolio, maybe some reviews, a contact page, and then maybe in about right you’re about is kind of the afterthought, because you are we’ll talk about this more, too. But you’re the guide, achieving a goal for your client, you’re not, you know, the star of the website.
Jennifer Miranda
Yes, I love that. Well, let’s dive into that. Because that’s one thing I love to hear is like, sometimes when we are developing our brands and creating our websites, we like to talk about us, we want to be the star of the show, we want to share all of our experience, we want to share why we’re overqualified to, you know, either have that service that you’re going to buy from us or offer that product. So what are some ways that we can flip it to make it about our clients? Because it’s really about them? Right?
Jennifer Miranda
Yeah, definitely. It’s about how can you help them achieve their goal quicker? And who can do it for the best, you know, that fits all their boxes? Who’s available? And so to answer that, I definitely think making the transformation that your client will achieve, be a story on your website. And again, that comes to brand strategy that comes to this, you know, the sales psychology of what you’re doing and why you’re doing it. But just telling that story of the transformation, and then like how you’re the one helping them with the transformation, but the main thing is, what this transformation is gonna do for them and why they need it, then it’s like, yeah, and I can help you do it. But so that’s definitely how we can flip it.
Jennifer Miranda
Yes, I love that. And that’s really encouraging too, because sometimes we feel I know a lot of us business owners, especially personal brands, we don’t like necessarily hearing our own voice or we don’t like kind of being the star of the show, we do want to put our clients first. But if we’re not using that copy, or using that brand messaging to express, hey, I’m here to help you, I’m here to guide you. And this is what we’re gonna do. And then another page, and this is why I’m qualified, right? Like I love that. Right? Right. Yes, that’s beautiful. So I would love for you to share with us any website and branding x that you wish that you could help every entrepreneur with.
Jennifer Miranda
Um, my biggest issue right now is definitely when in business owner, a personal brand new, any sort of thing, they walk into a situation and they’re ready for their website, but they don’t have any branding done, they’ve not sat down and put together a brand strategy, they don’t know what their brand voice is really who the brand is at all, because at the end of the day, the brand is supposed to evoke feelings, and all this in your client.
So you need a little more than just a website, or else you’re going to look like a robot. That’s my biggest thing right now. Um, also, I think another IQ is when someone comes to you for branding. And they want just a logo. And although a logo or they spend too much time or emotion or feeling on just this logo, when in reality, a brand has so many more elements that can do so much more than just the black and white logo. So those are that’s another is too much energy on just the logo and not enough on the strategy behind the entire message with the lowest.
Jennifer Miranda
Oh, I love this. So and I would love to kind of like dig a little deeper into this because I know when we’re starting businesses, or maybe we’ve already have an established business and a brand but maybe we’re launching something new or starting a new program maybe pivots are happening for a lot of us are experiencing a lot of growing pains and growth spurts. But we have a lot going on right like we want to brand refresh.
We want brand photography, we want to book a photo shoot with a local photographer, it’s time to start creating copy or investing in a copywriter or learning more about chat GPT like all these things, website updates, right? Social media, like what are what is your advice for where should we even begin when it’s like time for brand refreshes.
Jennifer Miranda
So I would say if social media scares you, you need to start there. If social media is one of those things where you’re like, Oh, I’ll get to it. Or no, no, it’s not perfect yet or if you’re still worried about showing up perfect get on social media right now because there’s no such thing as perfection and you have to just start to get even your you have to get comfortable with yourself at the end of the day. I would definitely start with social media, especially to because places like Instagram and Tiktok, they have, I mean, tick tock has a little bit longer of a lifespan, but the Instagram algorithm lifespan of your content is probably 24 to 48 hours, unless somebody’s like searching and scrolling through your page. But in reality for you to just be showing up the light, the lifespan of that piece of content is very small.
So start now, nobody’s gonna care, they’re gonna forget if you mess up. And then I would definitely move into branding overall. And in that branding umbrella, you can do anything which one you want first, but you’re going to need copywriting that goes along with your branding and your strategy. So you can show up and know what you stand for.
You’re going to need photography to represent this in a visual way for the users who are viewing your content. video as well, iPhone video, all that stuff falls into the branding umbrella. So the copywriting, the branding, photos, and the branding elements, like your colors, your logos, your energy that goes into it kind of all go together, you pick which one you want, which one you want to tackle first, and then move into a website because all of these elements, they’re just going to push you into website creation, that whole process is going to be so much easier.
You’ll have the option to do templates, custom templates, or even a full custom website if you want that. And for those that don’t know, you can have a website template where you insert your own branding photos, you insert your own branding fonts and your colors, but the build and the skeleton of the bones is already done for you. You can also have a customized template where you have a professional insert the copy and the branding photos that you supply them with to this template. And then you can have a fully custom website, which is just you going in and creating something
Jennifer Miranda
fresh with a designer. That sounds amazing. And I love how you broke that down for us. So it does seem actually attainable. It doesn’t seem like you have to do 27 things at once. Start small start taking those baby steps. Start developing
Jennifer Miranda
free start with a free one. dollars. So don’t just show up, talk to your phone. Get comfortable. And yeah, see where that takes you.
Jennifer Miranda
Yes, that’s amazing advice. And I’m always been a firm believer to like, we can have the most beautiful website we can have the most juiciest, most transformational like the best offer ever. But if nobody knows about it, you’re not going to make any sales, babe. So making sure that you have that online presence. And I love how you mentioned to like it’s okay to start scrappy, it’s okay to make mistakes like people are really were way more forgiving online than people think. Like I know there’s a couple of like, what do they call them keyboard warriors that are like really mean, but like for the most most part, all of us online are just trying to scroll find something to laugh about find something to learn and also to we’re always looking for answers, right? So if your business can provide that that’s that’s where it’s at. So start showing up now. I love that your cheerleader for social media.
Jennifer Miranda
Oh yeah. And also to like if Instagram weirds you out because you know too many people go to Tik Tok because they don’t show your content to your friends list. It’s if you ever noticed when you’re on Tik Tok, it’s somebody you’ve never met before, and you have no idea who they are. And you really don’t care about who they are. But what they’re doing is why you’re being entertained. So start with tick tock, if you just need to get over that fear of talking to randomness.
Jennifer Miranda
No, I love this. This is so good. So what advice Jennifer would you give for creating your brand story? Like where do we start with that? How do we discover who we are and what we want to represent.
Jennifer Miranda
So the brand story is your special thing. It’s your business’s special thing that only you do, and only you do well. And it’s the heart of the entire brand story. It could be what you love doing, it could be that one skill that everybody loves about you, but it’s just that thing that lights you up, I would start there. That’s kind of a good safe spot. And then you kind of branch out from there and give it a voice. So you have some copy with it right and you you need these key phrases and words that you always say that you’re always known for. That would be like that second phase of your brand story. And then it’s time to add a little bit of flavor, a little bit of seasoning, you get the colors, some cool fonts, try to be cohesive and just don’t overthink that stuff. Definitely a logo.
But now your brand is starting to really not only be something with a soul, it not only has a voice but now it looks like something right so we’re kind of growing the brand from the start. Most importantly is you need to be consistent. So figuring out who you are from that gecko is so important because if you try to say that, you know, your brand is all about holistic approaches and stuff but in their everyday life that’s not you like it’s gonna be seen through very quickly. So show up consistently and talk about your business to everybody. So it feels natural. But yeah, that’s that’s kind of how we grow this brand story organically and authentically.
Jennifer Miranda
Yes. Well, and speaking of brands, I would love to know, in your opinion, what separates just an everyday brand from a luxury brand. What? Yeah, like what elements actually make it look fancy and feel elevated?
Jennifer Miranda
Okay, so again, I think there’s a tangible and an emotional part of this equation. So from the emotional side, I think a business is just there to get a sale, they want to work with whoever they can, because they have bills to pay, they got ns, me, and they’re, they’re sitting there just chasing a bag, right? A luxury business knows exactly who they’re talking to. They create content specifically for their ideal client. That’s just, that’s their lane, they stay in their lane. And I think that definitely is the emotional side of the step what separates a business from a luxury business. So I think from a tangible aspect, or a visual aspect from branding, when you do the most, right, so you’ve got like a cartoon character as your logo, or your font is super fun, and bubbly, and has tons of colors and just a lot going on in a small space, right? If the logo is shrunk down to the smallest size it can be and you can’t see it. I think that separates, you know, a regular business logo or from a luxury business logo. If you think of a logo like Apple, or if you think of a logo like Google, if you shrink that logo down to the size of the smallest thing, you can still kind of recognize it, right? That’s just one key way that really separates. Obviously, there’s a lot of other elements that grow into these brands, when they get bigger, but that’s kind of a key takeaway. Like how little can we shrink that logo? Yeah, no, I love that.
Jennifer Miranda
That’s a really helpful tip. And like you mentioned before, too, people are overthinking this, right? Like they’re putting all of their they’re investing in this. They’re like losing sleep over what their logo looks like, when in reality, like that’s just a fraction. It has so many other elements that go into your brand, right? And I know I’ve seen it firsthand, I’ve had people approached me with that said, Oh, this logo or this little bit where this will go? And in my head, it’s like, what is that even
Jennifer Miranda
saying? You know what I mean? It’s like it says words, but I don’t feel anything. I need to see a little bit more of the heart and the soul.
Jennifer Miranda
Yeah, no, I love this. And I would love for you to share with us too. What are some free ways that we can elevate our online presence and our brand? Like, I feel like once you kind of have either like a little more high end or luxury website? How can we kind of embody that polished vibe for our brand,
Jennifer Miranda
I think you need to get real with yourself, get real with your audience about the reason the why and the driving force of you doing what you’re doing. Showing up as that version of yourself in every walk of life is going to help your brand and more than any investment ever could write like more than you can pay X, Y, Z, A, B and C. But if you’re not showing up as that version, it’s almost a waste of money. But in a tangible way, a very easy and inexpensive way I would be I would say part of me is to secure a domain. So if your business is called dope photos, Inc, I would secure WWW dot dope photos Inc, as quickly as you can. Because the way the internet works, once it’s gone, it’s very expensive. And I would even if there’s no website attached to this, you can still buy the domain and it’s about $1 or two if it’s available. And I would also tie an email to that domain. So Sally Jo at dope brand inc.com Or don’t photos inc.com secure that email and any type of communication you do with your clients with your bank with your business without Are you do just stick it to them. And those are some easy, easy ways to elevate your brand. But yeah,
Jennifer Miranda
I love that well and I have a little tip too and I learned this a long time ago. So if you are listening and you are thinking of purchasing a domain, do not like I repeat, DO NOT search it unless you are willing to buy it. Because there are so many people there’s like pirates like there’s literally pirates that I know. Yeah, there’s like there’s like programs that just showed up. Yeah, yes, that people that go and so even if you’re just searching like you know, don’t photos.com Don’t photo Inc don’t photos, whatever. Like the net if you just go see oh yeah, it’s available and then maybe you put it off and you wait weeks, months, even a year later to get it. By that time they actually have like their actual algorithms like I can say that word algorithms that will like will seal it up and then you go from buying something for $1 A month or $12 a year to like wanting and 1000s of dollars for that domain.
Jennifer Miranda
So another tip too is the shorter the better, the shorter, the more expensive to like if you can secure photos.com. Obviously, it’s taken. But you know, just the shortest logo you have the shortest domain possible is always better, it’s easier to remember. So, another tip, I have your full name.
Jennifer Miranda
So many letters. Well, I would, I would love to know too, because I have, obviously my own perspective with photography. And as I’m booking more content and branding shoots, I’m thinking of all the different ways that we can maximize our time and maximize photos. So I would love to know from you, Jennifer, like from a brand and website designer perspective, what are some photos that we should be capturing for our website,
Jennifer Miranda
It’s like a trend. So editorial has been super fun. And what that means is less of a picture of like a person holding a laptop, thinking coffee, and more of like arm writing on a desk, but it’s the business owners arm and she’s wearing her favorite bracelet that she always wears. She also has on those finger tattoos and her cool arm tattoos that she is only known for. Right? So just embodying those little pieces of the person who’s being photographed that are so unique to them.
Obviously, you want to make sure it’s things that they love about themselves. So have that and like your discovery call. I also think waiting for your branding before your photoshoot is important because if you get your branding done and you’re so in love with your logo or you have these really cool taglines, I had a client who got a neon sign created with the her logo that we created. So it was just in her branding photos, but it was just adding that extra layer right that extra elements. And again that’s like on the photographers and and the person who’s taking the photos.
But you can do that on a smaller scale. Like you can print your logo on stationery and like be writing in a photo but your stationery or your header is your logo right? Including those unique pieces. I think for sure. We all love the studio rentals that is so fun. But I’m really into the like all white backdrops now like just more of a editorial fashion sort of shoot, right? But again, don’t overthink it and don’t get scared of it. Another really awesome one that I think would actually help your clients.
It could be like a first photo opener. Let them put their favorite sunglasses on. Put your sunglasses on, and just feel yourself and feel good. Because those are your sunglasses that you wear all the day. And we’ve all feel better in sunglasses, right? So it’s like a good icebreaker, I think and those photos come out so cool. Who wears sunglasses inside? Right? Like, yeah. Those are some fun little ways to really just like get that personality like get get your client belly laughing right to where these are really her she’s showing up. And looking good doing it and feeling good doing it. So
Jennifer Miranda
yes, no, that’s so helpful. And that’s so important because you want to be in your element you want to be polished. But I love that sunglass idea. I’m totally gonna use that next time.
Jennifer Miranda
I saw that one from tick tock, but I love it. So
Jennifer Miranda
no, it’s so smart. So I love that you are developing this incredible business and your business. And this is why I love making these connection calls is helping so many other businesses thrive and to shine online and to find their voice, find their purpose and share it right like your you’ve made your passion, turn into profits to help others which is just the coolest thing. And one thing that many people may not know about you, if they haven’t met you is you have four beautiful babies. So I would love for you to open up a little bit share what it’s truly like juggling having this completely remote because you made it that way like this, this incredible business, as well as being a full time mama.
Jennifer Miranda
So I didn’t start fully remote. I actually started as going to visit clients. And then we did the branding and the buying for stores. Actually it was in like a retail side of branding. And I did have a child at the time. And as my family grew, we pivoted sort of over the years. So I’ve had four children, as you might know. But I was working with clients in person. And then when COVID happened, everybody went home. And everybody wanted an online store. Everybody wanted a website.
So these are areas that my corporate background had trained me for. And when I saw the balance of like, oh my gosh, I have these kids and I’m over here rushing them schlepping them to daycare, but I can work from home and they can be home when we when we can work around them instead of having them work around work. So I really dove hard into that and I even when people went back to work after COVID I was like no I Good, like we’re gonna stay here. And then of course, our family kept growing. So that’s probably the probably related.
Quianna Marie
Yeah. Oh, I love that. I love that. Well, do you have any advice for any young mamas that really are trying to juggle this? Like, I feel like it happened very organically for you. And not to say that organically doesn’t mean hard. Like it was still difficult. And you still had a lot on your plate. But is there anything that you wish you could share with these moms that are juggling all the things
Jennifer Miranda
I think, as moms, we’re so passionate about our children, and no job can ever compete with that like working for somebody could never compete with the love and care that your family needs. But when you have your business, and you’re also following a passion, right, like we love our children, we love our families. But we also love this thing that we’re growing right?
This brand or this business. So having a love for what you do is the way I keep going right? It’s my little outlet, aside from being their mom and a wife and all the things it’s like this cool little like, just for me sort of piece. And it feels authentic. I don’t feel like I have to fake it or at all. So yeah, follow those follow those highs, right when you feel them keep keep following them.
Quianna Marie
Yes, that is so beautiful. Oh my gosh. Well, thank you so much, Jennifer. I do and even though this kind of was a question already, but I love asking every guest if they have a key tip. And I would love for you maybe to direct this towards websites or branding. Any key tip that you wish you would either known sooner or you’d like to share with the audience today.
Jennifer Miranda
I would say just start and do it scared. If you’re in like a crossroad pray about it. That really helps me and just follow that but just start if it’s something you’re interested in, if you’re if you want to grow your brand, if you want to grow your website, just start do it.
Quianna Marie
Take up your online space. It’s meant for you there’s enough to go around the internet is a very big place. Do not be scared if your neighbor down the street is doing her own little thing to like, just just go just do you. Yes, that’s
Jennifer Miranda
the best advice ever. Thank you so much. So how can we work with you like I mean, I instantly became friends with you. And it’s so funny to I have to mention, I cannot let this episode complete without sharing that we grew up in the same hood like we’re from. Like we’re from Almaden like this is crazy. And then I didn’t I did not even connect with you until we were both here in Arizona and we attended spark for show at United. And it’s just such a small world.
Jennifer Miranda
No, I love that. And I feel like it’s happening all over Arizona. We’re taking over.
Quianna Marie
Yeah, we’re going from Almaden expressway to like Elsweyr. Like this is just how this is working out here.
Jennifer Miranda
Definitely, definitely. Yes. So
Jennifer Miranda
tell us how we can work with you babe. Like how can we connect with you? Where can we find you? And how do we become your friend?
Jennifer Miranda
So my business is Janelle consulting on all platforms. So Instagram, and my website is Chanel consulting.com. But right now we’re booking for fully custom brands. We do brand in a day, fully custom websites, as well as website templates. So
Jennifer Miranda
amazing. Oh, my gosh. And can you explain the GDL like because I know you’re Jennifer and everybody wants to call you Jade. So I just want to make sure there’s there’s clarify in there.
Jennifer Miranda
Okay, so my name is Jennifer Adele. And when I started my business, I just wanted me but not like my government. So we did Jabril. And that’s where that came from. And consulting is because that’s what I do.
Jennifer Miranda
I love it. Oh my gosh, well, I appreciate you and your time and your expertise. I feel like you were just a wealth of knowledge. And your heart is really out there to make people feel polished, to feel worthy. And I’m just I’m just so happy that you’re in my corner.
Jennifer Miranda
I love that because yeah, we just show up scared so many times. And when you show that first you’re not being yourself, you know you’re showing that first so I love being the hype woman in your corner and just like you can do it. Let’s go from day one. So
Jennifer Miranda
So buy that domain add a yes vote gender for for your website and come after me for photos. Let’s go. Yay. Well, thank you so much. I appreciate you and have a beautiful day.
Jennifer Miranda
Thank you for having me. This was so fun.
Jennifer Miranda
